Sell tattoo flash online: how to plan a flash drop

Stack of skull and floral tattoo designs

Selling tattoo flash online means putting your pre-drawn designs on a page where clients can see the price, pick a design and book it. A flash drop is the moment you release a new set, announced in advance so people are ready. Done well, a drop fills your calendar in a few hours. Done badly, it buries you in DMs. This guide walks you through planning a drop step by step.

Flash in one paragraph

Flash is a tattoo design drawn before anyone asks for it. Clients choose from what is available instead of commissioning a custom piece. It's usually quicker to book and easier to price. If you want the background first, read what tattoo flash is and how to sell it online. This article is about the practical side: running a drop.

Step 1: prepare the sheet

Decide how many designs you release. A small, focused set is easier for clients to choose from and easier for you to manage than a huge sheet. For each design, prepare:

  • A clean image of the design, photographed or scanned in good light
  • A price, or a starting price if the final price depends on size
  • A size range and suggested placements
  • Whether it's one-off (tattooed once) or repeatable (available to anyone)

Clear information up front prevents most questions later.

Step 2: choose one-off or repeatable

One-off designs create urgency: once they are claimed, they're gone. They work well for drops and for designs you're proud of as a single piece. Repeatable designs are good for classic motifs, small pieces and flash days. Many artists mix both in one drop. Whatever you choose, show it clearly next to each design so nobody is disappointed.

Step 3: decide how clients claim a design

This is where drops go wrong. If the only way to claim is a DM, you get dozens of messages at once, two people asking for the same design and no clear record of who was first.

Better options:

  • A flash page with a claim or booking button per design, so requests arrive with the design already selected
  • A deposit to confirm the claim, so only serious clients take a design
  • A clear "claimed" status, so a one-off design disappears once it's taken

On OnlineTattoo.art, flash pages with prices are available now. Claiming a design with a deposit, with the automatic "claimed" status, is in development as the Flash add-on. You can follow the status on the pricing page under add-ons and read how it works on the page about how to sell tattoo flash online.

Until claims with deposits are live, a booking form with a field for the chosen design works well: the request arrives complete, and you send a deposit link through your payment provider.

Step 4: announce the drop

Tell people in advance, with a date and time. Give them a preview of one or two designs, not the whole sheet.

  • Newsletter: the most reliable channel, because everyone who signed up receives it, unlike social media where only part of your followers sees a post. A tattoo newsletter built into your website lets you collect subscribers on your own site and send the announcement from your shop name.
  • Social media: stories and a post a few days before and on the day itself, always with a link to your flash page
  • In the studio: a printed sheet or a note at the counter for walk-in clients

Step 5: on drop day

  • Publish the flash page at the announced time
  • Send the newsletter and post the link
  • Keep an eye on claims and mark designs as claimed as soon as possible
  • Reply to booking requests in the order they came in

After a few hours, post an update: what's still available, what's gone. That second moment often brings another wave of claims.

Step 6: after the drop

Look back: which designs went first, which stayed? Use that for your next sheet. Photograph the tattooed flash once healed and add it to your portfolio; clients like to see how flash looks on skin. Our tips on tattoo portfolio photography help with that.

Keep it fair

Drops can create frustration when people miss out. A few habits keep it fair. Publish at exactly the announced time, not earlier for a lucky few. Handle claims strictly in order. If two people ask for the same one-off design, the first complete claim wins, and you tell the second person quickly and kindly. Consider limiting each client to one or two designs per drop, so a single person can't take the whole sheet. And if many people missed out on a popular design, consider whether it could become repeatable or inspire a new design for the next drop.

Pricing flash

Flash is usually priced per design, based on size and complexity. Many artists show a fixed price for small pieces and a starting price for larger ones. Be clear about what the price includes, and how the deposit is handled. If you want consistency, set a few price levels for your sheet rather than a separate price for every design.

Selling flash as prints

Some clients love a design but don't want it tattooed, or want the print as well. Selling prints of your flash in a webshop on your tattoo website adds a second way to earn from the same drawing. Keep tattoo rights and print sales separate: buying a print doesn't mean the design is claimed for a tattoo.

Flash drop checklist

  • Small, focused sheet with clear images
  • Price, size and placement per design
  • One-off or repeatable shown clearly
  • A claim method that isn't DMs, ideally with a deposit
  • Announcement by newsletter and social media, with date and time
  • Update after a few hours with what's still available
  • Healed photos added to your portfolio
