Tattoo shop in Rotterdam: how to choose an artist and book

Rotterdam is a big, modern port city with a tattoo scene to match: street shops, private studios and artists who focus on one style. The right tattoo shop in Rotterdam is the one with an artist who specialises in the tattoo you want, works cleanly and explains clearly how they work. This guide helps you narrow down the options, check what matters and book with confidence.
Rotterdam's tattoo scene in short
As a port city, Rotterdam has long had tattoo shops, and today its studios cover the full range of styles: traditional and neo-traditional, blackwork, fine line, realism, Japanese and more. Studios are spread across the city centre and the surrounding districts, on both sides of the river. Alongside walk-in shops you'll find private studios that only work by appointment, and guest artists who come to work in the city for a while.
We don't name or rank individual shops. Use our directory of tattoo shops in Rotterdam to browse studios with their location, styles and a link to their own website, then use the steps below to decide.
Step 1: start from the style
Most good artists specialise. Collect a few images of tattoos you like, ideally healed, and name the style. That makes it much easier to find the right artist. If it's your first tattoo, our first tattoo guide walks through the whole process.
Step 2: compare portfolios
Shortlist three or four artists and look for:
- Several pieces in your style, not just one
- Healed photos as well as fresh ones
- Clean lines, smooth shading and even colour or black
- Work of a similar size and placement to what you have in mind
Rotterdam is well connected by metro, tram and bike, so choose the artist first and the location second.
Step 3: check permit and hygiene
In the Netherlands, tattoo studios need a permit, and the GGD (the regional public health service) checks hygiene. A professional studio is clean and tidy, uses single-use needles and is happy to answer questions about how they work. Ask about age rules before you book; studios will ask for ID.
Step 4: walk-in, flash or appointment
Some Rotterdam studios take walk-ins for small pieces and flash, often on a first come, first served basis or on set days. Flash days can be a good way to get tattooed by an artist you like without a long wait: designs have a fixed price and size. Custom work is usually by appointment, with a consultation and a deposit.
Step 5: send a complete request
A complete request gets a faster and better answer:
- Your idea in a few sentences
- Placement and approximate size in centimetres
- Colour or black and grey
- Two to five reference images
- Your availability
Read the deposit rules before you pay: how much, whether it's deducted from the final price and what happens if you need to reschedule.
Step 6: the consultation
- Have you done similar pieces? Can I see healed examples?
- How many sessions do you expect, and what will it cost?
- What happens if I need to move my appointment?
- What aftercare do you recommend?
A good artist will also tell you if your idea needs a different size or placement to age well, and will be honest if another artist would suit your style better.
Budget
Prices differ between artists and depend on size, detail, placement and experience. Ask each artist on your shortlist for an estimate for your specific idea and what it includes. If your budget is limited, say so upfront; the artist may suggest a smaller size, a simpler design or a flash piece in your style. Choosing purely on price is risky: a tattoo that needs fixing later costs more.
Getting tattooed while visiting Rotterdam
If you're visiting, book ahead and plan your session early in your stay, so you can follow your artist's aftercare instructions for the first days nearby and ask questions if needed. Think about your plans: most artists advise against swimming, saunas and strong sun while a tattoo heals. Bring loose clothing that won't rub on the fresh tattoo, and ask your artist for advice if you fly soon after a session. Our general tattoo aftercare guide explains what usually happens in the first weeks; your artist's instructions always come first. If you live elsewhere, ask how touch-ups work after healing. Some studios offer a free touch-up within a set period; others charge a small fee or ask you to send photos first.
Pain and placement
Placement affects how a session feels and how a tattoo ages. Our general guide to tattoo pain by placement gives an overview of what to expect. If you have a medical condition or take medication, ask your doctor before getting tattooed.
Other Dutch cities
Travel times in the Netherlands are short. Our directory of tattoo shops in the Netherlands also covers Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and other large cities, and we wrote a separate guide to finding a tattoo shop in Amsterdam.
For Rotterdam shop owners
If you run a studio in Rotterdam, check your listing in our directory. You can claim your shop to add your own portfolio and keep your details up to date.
Clients often decide between a few studios in one evening on their phone. A website that shows each artist's work by style, explains booking and deposits and lists your address, opening hours and walk-in information as text helps them choose you. The OnlineTattoo.art tattoo website builder gives every artist a portfolio and booking form on your own domain. Start with a free website preview, built from your Instagram or current site.
